How did I become a Christian?
I went to Sunday school each week,
But never heard the Gospel news,
So for God I did not seek.
I heard about Creation and Jonah,
They were just fables I was taught,
Never heard of the Savior’s love,
Through His death salvation bought.
At age fourteen I was allowed to leave,
Old enough to make up my mind.
What a happy day that was for me,
Leaving boring religion behind.
I began a millinery apprenticeship,
Making hats for ladies to wear.
However, I sat next to a Christian,
And the gospel she wanted to share.
Well, I wasn’t having any of that,
Though she sang hymns every day,
So I would stick pins into her,
While she “ouched” the hymns away.
Another Christian was also there,
Kept saying “Jesus died for you”,
Sometimes I actually wondered,
If what she said could really be true.
At first I treated it all as a joke,
And making many a smart remark,
But then the Holy Spirit seemed
In me to light a little spark.
After four years I finally believed,
That Jesus had died for me,
And He rose up from the dead,
Now my own risen Savior is He.
The Bible became a living book.
Not dull like it was before.
The pleasures I had once desired,
Held no interest for me any more.
People began to think I was mad,
Religious mania had gone to my head,
But after seeing the change in me,
They knew I was quite sane instead.
So I became a child of God
By being born again from above,
Now it was me telling others,
The story of Jesus and His love.
“… it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching
to save them that believe” (I Corinthians 1:21b).
I thank God for those two who “preached”,
For that led me Christ to receive.
